Choosing Between A Left or Right Handed Guitar

When you are naturally left handed, your whole life you feel like you have to learn things backwards.  When starting to play the guitar, the suggestion for you as a lefty will be to learn left handed guitar, but it might not be the best choice.

You will feel awkward regardless what hand you use.  When starting out, playing your guitar is going to be uncomfortable and awkward.  Your hands and fingers haven’t been challenged and stretched in such a way before.  Since this is the case, you have the option of choosing which hand you would like to use with the guitar.  Find out why you might want to use a right handed guitar.

All guitar material will always be backwards.  If you choose to play left handed all material and chord charts will be backwards.  Tablature which many guitar songs can be easily played with always have to be played backwards.  All scales will be taught backwards.  This just makes it rather difficult in the long run.

Left handed guitars have less models and are more expensive.  You will always be limited in your choices.  Even when you find the guitar you want, it’s going to be considerably more compared to the right handed model.  It’s also annoying to not be able to play a friend’s new guitar because it’s the wrong hand.

The most used hand on a right handed guitar is the left hand.  On the right hand guitar technique the left hand is on the fretboard while the right hand picks or strums.  Picking and strumming is much easier than using the fretboard.  It makes more logical sense to use your strong hand, your left, to do the hardest job while using your less dominant hand, your right, to do the easier task.

Make whatever decision you want.  The lefty has many advantages to just used a right handed guitar.

Piano Online Lessons – Why You Must Understand The Difference Between Practice And Playing!

If you are contemplating piano lessons online, downloading the training material is the easy bit – committing to ongoing learning and practice can be the hardest part. Let’s face it, anyone would love to play the piano. The thought of sitting on stage in front of an audience anticipating a classical masterpiece, or your latest pop hit, sends shivers up your spine. The problem is that, while most would love to PLAY the piano, not so many want to actually LEARN the piano, or even PRACTICE the piano. Unfortunately, playing (to any kind of decent standard) can only result from a regular learning and practice regime.

One way to make practice seem not quite so daunting is to look at it from another angle. Consider it a way of accelerating the learning process – in order that you will soon be able to play well.

You need to push yourself. Irregular practice, or just thumping out old tunes you are familiar with will get you there – but very slowly. You need to keep moving along, gaining better technical skills through a proper structured training process. Practice is not the act of repeating songs over and over again – practice is actually venturing into unfamiliar territory. In reality, you should practice what you don’t already know, not what you do know.

Practicing piano should be just like any other project – it needs some planning. If you are expecting to have a 2 hour practice slot, determine beforehand where you aim to be after it. Are you going to try out some new chords, or inversions, for example? Note this down, and make sure you keep practicing these – don’t give up or just go back to your old favorite selections. After you have achieved your goals for the session, you can then reward yourself by indulging in some familiar pieces – safe in the knowledge that you have made progress.

With practice, repetition is vital. When you hit something that is difficult, practice it 3 times a day, or more, until you master it. If you are determined, you will master it. Don’t be put off if a part takes longer to conquer than you thought it would. Some parts of piano online lessons may take you months to truly master – but you will get where you want to go, eventually.

Don’t be frightened of making mistakes when you are practicing. You should not expect to get everything right first time. Remember the difference between PRACTICE and PLAYING. When you are practicing, it’s fine to get it wrong. The idea is that you learn during PRACTICE, so that when you are finally PLAYING, or performing, the piece, you will be getting it right every time.

If you are taking piano online lessons, you have the added advantage that you can practice when it suits you. So if you are conscious that there are others in the house, and still wary of them hearing your mistakes, schedule your practice sessions when you won’t be disturbed (or be disturbing others). Or simply explain to them the difference between practice and playing.

Getting The Balance Right Between Music Theory And Practical In Schools

This is an issue facing most music educators – how much do you load students up with theoretical knowledge and how much do you just let them play?

There has never been a subject in which the practical aspect is more important than in music. Learning music should always be about doing in any school Singing, Movement, Playing and listening all play an important part.

No-one would disagree that music lessons in schools should have a lot of practical components. The only thing that I have found music teachers to disagree on is how much music theory the school lessons should include.

Music Theory can be a very dry and boring subject – if you let it! In a high school or junior high or setting studying keys, scales, transposition and modes can quickly seem irrelevant to the students.

What is important is to link the practical and the theory lessons as much as possible. If you can take a piece the students are currently playing, and start the theory lesson by looking at that you’ll have much more success.

If your school has a Rock based curriculum it is easy: you simply program a theory lesson after each practical lesson. In this lesson plan the students can a)find and listen to a recording of the song they are playing b) study the manuscript of the song they are learning Engage in theory activities and exercises based on this music that are suitable to their current level d) think about suitable arrangements for instruments that would suit the music.

The theory lesson could be similar if your school has a more traditional band or classical program. The traditional approach is to choose a  theory book and make them go through each activity in order, despite the order that they should do things. Instead you could pick an activity based on the problems or challenges they are currently facing in band or orchestra, and choose a worksheet based on that.

If music teachers can take more of this integrated approach, then music theory lessons will become much more fun for children studying music in schools.
